All About LNC The Blog

The ramblings & journey of an aspiring legal nurse consultant.

Can I be a Legal Nurse Consultant?

Yes!

Yes, you can.

How?

You’ve done the major part already. You are already a Registered Nurse!

You’re probably still thinking, but how??

Ok, you’re a nurse with a specialty. It could be Medical -Surgical , Orthopedics, Labor and Delivery, Post Anesthesia Care, Intensive Care, Case Management, Rehab, Long Term Acute Care…you see where I’m going.

We all come from somewhere where we started out as new nurses, we learned, we absorbed, we became independent , comfortable enough to train other new nurses. Becoming charge nurses then into management or other nursing units to learn even more.

We became experts in that field, before landing here, as a new LNC.

So now, how do we take all that information we gathered working as an RN at the bedside and apply it to the world of LNC?

Think back to all the patients you cared for or managed. All the complex issues. Comorbidities. Medication Administration Records. Allergies. Complications/ Reactions . Admission Assessments, etc.

Wherever you came from, you have specials skills that you can convert to the LNC role.

Perspective.

Instead of thinking in shift work. Arrive at work, get report, plan your shift, reconcile meds, check orders, check labs, check vitals administer medications, provide wound care, and so forth; let’s think of the bigger picture. The mini reports before and after each shift or actual intel. A snap shot. Instead of a little snapshot, we are analyzing each piece of pertinent information. We are verifying that information. We now have concrete dates of that information. When we put it all together, we can see how or why something happened (hello chronology). We can rule out things.

Did you know at the bedside, we treat and care for patients according to the standard of care? We use strategic care plans for each condition. We may not realize it at first, but there’s a name to everything. There’s proven case studies, there’s evidence based practices.

Whew!

What I’m saying is. Use what you have seen, what you have experienced, what’s stored in your brain. That’s what makes your nursing skills unique and just right to expand upon as an LNC!

I hope y’all understood the message. Mind of a “novice” LNC!

What are your unique nurse skills that will make you a great LNC?
